The HamHam Project - Exchanging Knowledge.

In January 2007 we organised for a group of 8 musicians to travel to The Gambia and work with over forty musicians from four bands each from a different tribal background and musical heritage.

Within 2 week the group had worked with all the musicians and took eight songs from The Gambia and blended them with different western styles.

Everyone involved in the project learnt something new and have benefited from experience of working with musicians from another part of the world.

We are planning another trip from 9th January 2009 - 23rd January 2009.

Taking all we have learnt from the original project and Musa Mboob's years of experience planning and running projects like this. We have fine tuned the project to maximise the potential of learning new skills and being inspired to take your music to a new level.

Project Structure.

The project is open to anyone based anywhere in the world, but travel to The Gambia included in the package is only available from the UK. Transportation to the UK or direct to The Gambia will have to be arranged and paid for from non UK residents.

Included in the package is flights to/from Gatwick to Banjul (The Gambia) transportation while in The Gambia, Accommodation and filed trips. Transport to and from Gatwick and food are the only extra costs you should need.

For this project we are working with two groups. One from the Mandinka tribe and one from the Karondinka tribe. You will travel to their village, near the hotel, and spend three days at each village working with the musicians. You will then have three days in a studio to record the songs you've been working on and prepare for a concert to play the music live.

Between each stage of the project there will be filed trips to national places of interest like the museum, St James island and get to see some of the local industries. These are not compulsory but they are designed to help you understand the history and issues of life in The Gambia as well as the music and we strongly recommend them.

The plan is to work on another eight songs, four with each group, record them and play them live.

Musicians of all levels are welcome but you will get the most from this experience if you are able to work well with other musicians, a fast learner and able to improvise.

The cost of taking part is currently £3,000 per person but we are looking into the possibility of securing sponsorship and funding to help reduce this price.
